“Oscillating between ancient history and modern times, Wild Roses is a classically styled epic poem with intricate layering reminiscent of the genre's venerated works. Both quintessential and inventive in execution, it borrows from the traditions of its predecessors while doing its part to build on them. Tall as the task may be, the book succeeds admirably. Pacing is uneven at times, but the book is competently organized. It stays its purposeful course to the end, rarely (if ever) losing its bearings in the labyrinth of its own ambitions.

Written in lyrical prose and beautifully patterned brushstrokes without feeling overly adorned or impressionistic, the book's structural nest is intricate but the central conflict at its heart's center is durably simple. Armas's symptoms of spiritual fatigue are universally relatable, and through her journey we are reminded of our own struggles with the book's core themes: the pain of separation, and the personal lengths required to mend our relationships with the divine.

Wild Roses is a beautifully written biblical allegory that takes the reader far and wide -- traversing continents and generations, dimensions and millennia, etc. -- but travels furthest inward.”
